• What kind of bar is Mary’s?
Mary’s a (mostly) gay bar that attracts a (somewhat) alternative crowd. Most people and press reviews mention that Mary’s is a fun and friendly neighborhood bar. We are especially known for some of our special events, and our karaoke on Tuesday is the best in the city.
  • What kind of people go to Mary’s?
A wildly diverse bunch of fun-loving misfits, but more younger gay men than anyone else. Lesbians are welcome, and have the additional attraction of My Sister’s Room next door to us. Many straight people are a part of the “regulars” too.
  • How old do you have to be to go in?
    21. Absolutely no exceptions. Sorry.
  • Is there a dress code?
No, but we reserve the right to make fun of you if you wear flip-flops.
  • Is it safe?
Yes. Good grief. It’s just a bunch of grown-ups who like to have fun.
  • How much is parking?
Free, and it’s easy to find if you arrive before 11pm.
  • Is there a cover?
Almost never. Certain special events and fundraisers may have request a small ($2 or so) donation at the door.
  • Do you serve food?
Nothing cooked, but there are 12 places with takeout in the two-block area. If it’s not busy, feel free to grab you food and sit with us while you eat. The bartenders even have the menus from local joints available. We have some pre-packaged snacks if you are feeling lazy.
  • Can you smoke inside the bar?
On weekends, no. On most weeknights, for now, yes. During certain special events you may need to smoke upstairs and/or outside (there will be signs). No cigars please.
  • What sort of music do you play?
As you might expect, with a diverse crowd we play diverse music. Our music leans alternative, but we love good pop dance music as much as anyone else. Many nights feature music videos, and we have a collection of 6,000 videos to draw from. On Tuesday, our karaoke host CJ has more than 10,000 karaoke tracks for you to choose from.
  • When did Mary’s open?
October 1998 (we think). Mike, Ben and Bill, the current owners, bought it in January 2005.
  • Why are you closed on Sunday?
So that our employees may attend the worship service of their choice. Also, since we don’t sell at least 50% of our sales in food, we can’t be open by law. Which makes you wonder about some other joints.
  • Can I rent Mary’s for my event?
Yes, and there are several ways to do this depending on what you want to do. Contact us and explain your needs and we’ll give you some options to consider.
  • Are you hiring?
Mary’s is a great place to work, and our staff rarely changes. That said, sometimes people do move on. You are welcome to drop off a resume at the bar and we’ll give you a call if something opens up. Emailing or calling about a job is a waste of your time.
